User levels

The legacy from WordPress 2.0.

User levels were abolished in 2010 with version 3.0 — and are still read today: by old plugins, by themes with user_level queries and by a few importers. By default this section only shows what is there. Whoever needs them switches maintenance on; the holders of the role then get the matching user_level meta.

All seven plugins included in the lifetime deal — every future one too.

FAQ about user levels

Do I need this?
Mostly not. Only if an old plugin or theme queries user_level instead of using current_user_can().
Does anything change if I do nothing?
No. Switched off, the levels are only shown, not touched.
Why aren’t they simply gone?
Because WordPress keeps writing them along out of consideration for old code. What is being read should also be viewable.
