Who may see which content.

Why 403 and not 404?
Because the page exists and is merely locked. With status 200, search engines would take the notice text into the index as content.
Do locked posts disappear from the archive?
If you switch it on, yes — from archives, search and feeds. Switched off they stay in the list and only the request is blocked: then you see title and excerpt.
What happens when the module is switched off?
Nothing is deleted. The rules you set stay in the post meta — switching off is a rest state, not a cleanup.
