Image sizes

One upload, and the folder holds as many files as there are registered sizes.

Every theme and every plugin may register its own image sizes. WordPress then creates one file per size on every upload — even for sizes no page ever serves. Which sizes are actually registered is something the kakapo asks WordPress itself, listing dimensions, cropping and origin alongside. Whatever you don't need, you switch off; the measurement of the uploads folder tells you beforehand what each size takes up.

FAQ about image sizes

What happens to the files that already exist?
They stay where they are — this plugin deletes no images. Switching off takes effect from the next upload on and when sizes are regenerated after an image edit. The existing stock in the uploads folder is not affected; the media library still points to it, after all.
What does WordPress serve if the requested size is missing?
The next existing file, usually the original: the page stays intact but loads more bytes at that spot. For the four sizes WordPress itself accesses — thumbnail, medium, medium_large and large — this appears as a warning in the table, and before switching off there is a confirmation prompt.
How reliable are the measured numbers?
Every figure comes from real file sizes on disk, with the sizes mapped to the entries in the media library. The measurement has a budget of 20 seconds; if that is not enough, the result is marked as incomplete and the figures there are called lower bounds instead of being extrapolated. From 120,000 image files on, the split of the remainder into originals and files without a media library entry is dropped as well.
