Back up and transfer settings

Each of the eight plugins comes with the “Take settings with you” area under “System”: it exports the settings as a JSON file and imports them again on the next website — without license details and without secrets such as passwords or keys. Consent and Roles additionally export their entire setup.

Taking settings along as a file

  1. Open the plugin and choose “Take settings with you” on the left in the “System” group.
  2. In the “Export” card, click “Create file”. The name of the JSON file contains the plugin and today’s date.
  3. On the target site, open the same plugin and the same area.
  4. In the “Import” card, select the file and click “Import”. The response states how many settings were applied and how many were discarded.
  • The file contains the plugin’s settings. What it stores separately — with Consent, for example, the recorded services, with Roles the roles themselves — only comes along via their own export.
  • Not included are passwords, encryption and webhook keys, or anything tied to this one website, such as the license key and license status. The file itself lists what it has left out.
  • Only what already exists on the target site and has the same type is imported. A file from a different plugin is rejected.
  1. Open Kakapo Consent and choose “System” on the left in the “Legal & Tools” group.
  2. In the “Data & transfer” card, click “Export” next to “Export settings”.
  3. This produces a JSON file whose name contains the plugin and today’s date.
  4. On the target site you open the same card, choose the file under “Import settings” and click “Import”.
  • Included are settings, detected services, domains, blocking rules, languages, translations, vendors and the entries for the legal texts.
  • Not included are license details and the plugin’s three secrets: API token, proof signature and webhook signature.
  • On import, unknown keys are discarded. If the file does not come from an export of this plugin, it is rejected.

Sending settings directly to a connected site

If a site is connected under “Remote Sites” (in German: „Remote-Sites“), “Send config” (in German: „Config senden“) transfers a fixed section of the Consent configuration: whether the manager is active, title and text, color, script and font blocking, validity period, layout, position, granular consent and the four button labels. The target site checks every value itself and reports back how many settings it has applied.

Moving an entire installation

If all the settings are to move to another server together with the content, the migration tool in Kakapo Backup is the right way. Under “Action” (in German: „Aktion“) → “Migration”, “Create portable archive” produces a fresh backup with the configured scope for immediate download; on the new installation you restore it in the same area via the “Import” card. The database comes along with it — and with it the options of all eight plugins.

When restoring an archive from a different installation you additionally have to confirm that it may be restored even though the database name differs. Before writing back, the plugin automatically creates a snapshot.

Kakapo Roles exports its entire setup — roles, capabilities, visibility rules and redirects — under “Transfer” → “Import & export”. The licence key and the assignment of individual users stay out of it.

Raw data and logs are available separately: Analytics exports raw view data and reports as CSV, Consent and Security their logs, and Media its provenance findings under “Review list” with “All findings as CSV”.
