Broken link check

If a target stops responding, it shows up in the list.

Every address in your content gets an HTTP-HEAD request: only the status line, without loading the page. Whatever no longer answers then gathers in a list.

FAQ on Broken link check

Why HTTP-HEAD and not a normal request?
HEAD only asks for the status, without transferring the content. That is enough to learn whether an address still answers, and it puts less load on other people's servers.
What do I do with a dead link?
Replace it in the text or remove it. If it points to an address of your own that has moved, a redirect is the better way.
Are all the reports real errors?
Not necessarily. Some servers do not like HEAD requests or shut out automated access. When in doubt, look at a reported entry yourself in the browser.
