Do I have to match the word exactly?

Case sensitivity can be switched off. Inflected forms are caught by the gap notation: “Backup {1} einrichten” also matches “Backup richtig einrichten”.

What happens with several matches in the same text?

Only the first occurrence is linked while that switch is on. Otherwise the limits from the rules apply.

Can a target link to itself?

No. A page never links to itself, even if its own word appears in the text.
