Backups automatically on a schedule

Applies to: Kakapo Backup· 3 min read

A schedule takes the remembering off your hands: WordPress triggers the backup itself. The plugin brings two ways for this — a simple daily plan and, next to it, an advanced schedule with a freely selectable rhythm.

Setting up the run

  1. In the menu item “Kakapo Backup”, choose the item “Schedule” (in German: „Zeitplan“) on the left under “Configuration”.
  2. Switch on “Scheduled backup”.
  3. Under “Time”, enter the local time for the daily run; the default is 02:30.
  4. Below the fields, the next run is then shown with date and interval.
  5. If you need a different rhythm, switch on the item “Use advanced schedule” in the “Advanced schedule” card and choose the matching entry under “Frequency”.
  6. If no date is shown in the same card under “Next run”, click “Reschedule”.

These frequencies are available

  • Custom interval — interval in minutes, at least 5, at most 10,080
  • Hourly
  • Daily — additionally with a time
  • Weekly — with time and weekday
  • Monthly — with time and day of the month from 1 to 28
If you switch on the advanced schedule, the plugin switches off the simple daily plan so that nothing is backed up twice. If you then activate the daily plan again by hand, the card points out the duplicate runs.

Both schedules hang on WP-Cron and are only triggered when the website is called up; on quiet sites a real server cron on wp-cron.php is worthwhile. For this the “Status” area contains the “WP-Cron helper” card and, with the “Backup watchdog”, a display when no successful backup has been created for too long. Whether a scheduled run succeeded is reported on request by the “Notifications” (in German: „Benachrichtigungen“) area by email via the switches “Report on success” and “Report on error”.
